INTRODUCTION: The Importance of Maintaining a Healthy Microbiome: Sequencing the human genome revealed that humans have approximately 23,000 genes. 1. DIVERSITY: Greater diversity means a large number of different strains of probiotic bacteria in the GI tract. How to Save Time Making Salads: Ross’ Salad Buzz YouTube Video
One of the most important requirements for the creation and maintenance of a healthy microbiome is the following: You MUST feed you probiotic bacteria well, or they will not thrive and survive. The type of “food” that probiotic bacteria require are the non-digestible fibers that are primarily found in multi-colored vegetables. Eating a wider range of different kinds of fiber-rich veggies will support the growth of a wider range of probiotic bacteria. Greater diversity = a healthier microbiome and a healthier you.
A salad with leafy greens and a variety of multi-colored vegetables is the best way to feed your microbiome. However, making salads is time consuming which is a major reason why many people don’t eat salads regularly.

Once a week I buy all my organically grown veggies. I wash them in a weak solution of hydrogen peroxide and then process them. I use our Cuisinart food processor to do much of the work, but you can easily cut the veggies up by hand if you don’t have a food processor. A couple items like a red pepper and a batch of parsley I cut or chop by hand. I toss all the cut, chopped & processed veggies together in my largest kitchen bowl.
Here’s the secret: After all the veggies have been processed, squeeze a whole medium sized lemon and pour the lemon juice over the processed veggies. Use a pair of salad tongs to toss everything well so that the lemon juice is well mixed into the buzz mix. The vitamin C in the lemon juice is an antioxidant that protects the processed veggies from spoiling. After mixing in the lemon juice, I transfer the buzz to a large Tupperware container and store it in the refrigerator. It stays fresh for about a week.
Most evenings my wife and I have a large salad as our main meal of the day. We try to feed our microbiome well every day. With the salad buzz already prepared, fixing a salad just takes a couple minutes. I take the container with the buzz out of the refrigerator along with a bag of lettuce and a container of sprouts. A handful of lettuce, a pinch of sprouts and a big scoop of salad buzz. Presto, you’ve got your salad made. We add some wild caught salmon or some beans, seeds & nuts for protein.
